It uses simple run-length (RLE) compression and was one of the most common image formats of the DOS and early Windows era; many old game assets, scanner and fax outputs and industrial-panel images are still PCX, but modern browsers and viewers mostly no longer open it.

支持哪些 PCX？Which PCX files are supported?

A 256-colour file with no palette at the end is shown as greyscale, with a note.

转成 PCX 时输出什么格式？What kind of PCX does it write?

输出 PCX 第 5 版、24 位真彩色（RGB 三个平面）、RLE 压缩，分辨率标为 72 DPI；PCX 没有透明通道，透明处填充你选的背景色。如果目标软件只认 256 色 PCX，需要先用其他工具减色。Version 5, 24-bit true colour (three RGB planes), RLE-compressed, tagged 72 DPI. PCX has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with your background colour. If the target program only reads 256-colour PCX, reduce the colours with another tool first.

为什么转换后的 PCX 比 PNG 大？Why is the PCX bigger than the PNG?

PCX 的 RLE 只能压缩连续相同的像素，对照片和渐变几乎没有效果；PNG 用的 Deflate 压缩效率高得多。所以照片转成 PCX 通常会变大，这是格式本身的限制。PCX's RLE only compresses runs of identical pixels, so it does almost nothing for photos and gradients, while PNG's Deflate is far more efficient. Photos therefore usually get bigger as PCX — a limit of the format itself.
